magazine dedicated to ear monitors. The magazine will focus on every aspect of
ear monitors from the consoles to the ears. It will feature articles from
industry people to provide helpful insight and knowledge of ear monitors,
product reviews, and key facts about ear monitors. Joy Bastow, owner of Let’s Talk Earz, has
been working in the field of custom ear monitors for over 5 years and has
helped many musicians transition to the world of ear monitors. Her goal with
the magazine is to provide a fully educational site to anyone from performing
musicians, studio musicians, dj’s, to the film industry. The site will also be interactive with an
online forum to allow individuals to discuss issues or ask questions for others
to answer and help.

Ms. Bastow hopes to continue to grow the magazine and

Ultimate Ears Releases a New Product

Ultimate Ears releases a new product! The Ultimate Ears In-Ear Reference Monitors are designed for professional studio engineers and producers for use during recording, mixing and mastering original music content. Other applications include FOH venue tuning, live recording and mixing. This is also an excellent product for “audiophile” or serious music listener because of its natural and authentic sound reproduction.

The Ultimate Ears In-Ear Reference Monitors are an industry first and are a combination of the Ultimate Ears pro audio sound along with a flat frequency response curve that has been developed & tuned in collaboration with the historic and widely respected Capitol Studios engineering team. The Ultimate Ears In-Ear Reference Monitors allow the user to record, mix and master anywhere, anytime because they provide up to -32 dB of noise isolation. Once the product is inserted in the user’s ears, the user is always in the “sweet spot” no matter where they are. This is because the music is being reproduced and delivered directly from the source into one’s ears. Since they are noise isolating, there is no need to be concerned with environmental acoustics and noise. Lightweight and portable, they can be used as an honest base line reference source when recording and mixing in unfamiliar venues. In addition, they can be used on an airplane, in the waiting room or anywhere you can find time to work!

Specifications
Input Sensitivity: 98 dB SPL @ 1 kHz
Efficiency: 112 dB SPL @ 1 kHz, 1mW
Frequency Response: 5 Hz to 20,000 Hz
Impedance: 35 Ohms @ 1 kHz
Internal Speaker Configuration: Three balanced, precision armatures (woofer, mid driver & tweeter)
Noise Isolation: -26 dB (100% acrylic housing) and -32 dB (soft silicone material option)
Input Connector: 1/4" jack adapter gold plated; 3 pole 1/8" (3.5 mm) standard jack

Key Facts of Custom In-ears

My name is Joy Bastow, owner and ear mold specialist of Let’s Talk Earz. Through my years of fitting and selling custom in-ear monitors I have learned several key facts that seem to happen to most musicians going in-ears.

1. Poor ear impressions- ear impressions done incorrectly will lead to two big issues such as; fit issues causing pain or discomfort to your ears & fit issues causing seal breakage which leads to bad sound quality. Many audiology clinics do not agree with the fitting process the manufacturers ask for. It all starts with the ear impressions and this should be your first step in insuring it’s done correctly (see “Impression Process” page).

2. Purchasing without expert help- many who purchase in-ears purchase in-ears not knowing if that product is a good match for them. Each product provides a different sound and a lot of times musician’s purchase not buying the product with the sound they truly need. This comes from buying direct from the manufacturer and not finding a professional who knows how to explain each product and help the person in their decision. A quality professional will be able to provide education and tips on the “how to” and providing assistance through the life of the in-ears.

Custom in-ears are becoming more and more popular within the music industry.Custom monitors help to eliminate feedback, lower onstage noise levels and reduce vocal fatigue. Custom fit monitors not only allow you to hear with clarity and crispness, when used properly they help protect your hearing. They can provide up to 25 dB reduction.

Are you someone that purchased a custom product and currently have fit issues? There are some ways of correcting the issue. One way is through a comply wrap (a product that I carry that helps isolate the mold more) and by remaking (this sometimes can be very pricey). To find out if your fit issue can be corrected please contact Joy Bastow today at joybastow@letstalkearz.com
