Key Facts of Custom In-ears

My name is Joy Bastow, owner and ear mold specialist of Let’s Talk Earz. Through my years of fitting and selling custom in-ear monitors I have learned several key facts that seem to happen to most musicians going in-ears.

1.     Poor ear impressions- ear impressions done incorrectly will lead to two big issues such as; fit issues causing pain or discomfort to your ears & fit issues causing seal breakage which leads to bad sound quality.  Many audiology clinics do not agree with the fitting process the manufacturers ask for. It all starts with the ear impressions and this should be your first step in insuring it’s done correctly (see “Impression Process” page).

2.     Purchasing without expert help- many who purchase in-ears purchase in-ears not knowing if that product is a good match for them.  Each product provides a different sound and a lot of times musician’s purchase not buying the product with the sound they truly need.  This comes from buying direct from the manufacturer and not finding a professional who knows how to explain each product and help the person in their decision.  A quality professional will be able to provide education and tips on the “how to” and providing assistance through the life of the in-ears.

Custom in-ears are becoming more and more popular within the music industry.Custom monitors help to eliminate feedback, lower onstage noise levels and reduce vocal fatigue. Custom fit monitors not only allow you to hear with clarity and crispness, when used properly they help protect your hearing. They can provide up to 25 dB reduction.

Are you someone that purchased a custom product and currently have fit issues? There are some ways of correcting the issue. One way is through a comply wrap (a product that I carry that helps isolate the mold more) and by remaking (this sometimes can be very pricey).  To find out if your fit issue can be corrected please contact Joy Bastow today at joybastow@letstalkearz.com
